RJ Overview

Restorative Practices are a set of tools and techniques that continually contribute to a culture of care while also repairing conflict and harm. A restorative culture addresses and repairs harm, aids in healing and restoration, and involves the community directly and indirectly impacted. This practice invites individuals to engage in self-awareness, social-emotional skills, empathy, accountability, gender, and cultural education. Restorative practices encourage a paradigm shift from punitive to restorative.

What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative Justice is a process where everyone involved in and affected by harm, conflict, or a crime, voluntarily agrees to gather along with their supporters, and self-identified resources, to hear what exactly happened during an incident, express how they are affected, and attempt to reach an agreement that will resolve the conflict and prevent it from happening again. Restorative justice dictates that reconciliation is determined by the individuals directly involved in and affected by the harm. This process does not dictate the need for experts to determine the outcome. Individuals harmed can request what they need to feel resolved and those who caused harm can take accountability. Participants, along with their supporters, can reach an agreement on what needs to happen to resolve the matter. RJ fosters accountability and healing for participants.
